Playing by heart – The Vision and Practice of Belonging

Fred O. Donaldson

Reinventing free play in our daily lives.
Children play. They don’t have to “learn” it, they “don’t intend to do it”. But already in early childhood the original game is taken over and replaced by cultural practices. Competition becomes the guiding principle, and practices that originate in the adult world increasingly displace the original connection between the hearts of two players. In the original game, far from competition, there is no winner or loser – play is an interaction that arises from the moment, from the relationship. Donaldson’s basic work on the language of play outlines the game as a unique and practical way to experience belonging and connectedness – a connectedness that most of us have forgotten since our earliest childhood.
